Panels for ripening chambers

Banana, mango and papaya ripening chambers need tight temperature control and an airtight box, because ethylene must stay in and fresh air comes in only when you choose. The panels decide how airtight the chamber can be.

What the panels must do

Get these right

1

Thickness

Commonly 80–100 mm PUF for walls and ceiling. Chambers may later be used as chillers, which argues for 100 mm.

2

Airtightness

Cam-lock or well-sealed joints, sealed floor junctions and gas-tight doors.

3

Racking loads

Pallet racks are free-standing. Do not hang loads from the panels.

Watch out for

Common mistakes

  • Use airtight doors
  • Plan forced-air ripening airflow before cutting the panels
  • Some chambers are later used as chillers
